Wireless Modem Aircards For computing
on the go without the hassle of always having to find a WiFi
hotspot, you need a cellular broadband aircard. These wireless
modems plug into the PCMCIA slot or USB connector on your laptop
or notebook computer. They give you broadband Internet access
anywhere you can get cell phone service, including schools, restaurants,
offices, parks, and even in your car.
How to Buy an Aircard
Wireless modem aircards are designed to work specifically with
one wireless carrier. You can choose from AT&T, Verizon,
Sprint or T-Mobile. Each of these carriers offers what's called
a "data plan" that gives you broadband access on the
Internet but no ability to make telephone calls. Because wireless
spectrum is scarce, these plans are not unlimited like your home
DSL or Cable broadband. A typical limit is 5 GB of data per month.
That serves the needs of the vast majority of mobile broadband
users, but you'll likely exceed it and have to pay overages if
you are a heavy video downloader or try to use this service as
much as you would a wired business or home broadband user. Check
details of each provider's plans to get the best for your situation.
Also, be sure to check coverage maps in order to pick the carrier
that has the best coverage in the areas you will be spending
most of your time and need mobile broadband.
Note that some
aircards also work as WiFi adaptors if your computer doesn't
already have one. Some even offer removable solid state memory.
Look for these features if they are important to you.
